ABOUT ME
I have always been a storyteller. But for a long time, I didn’t know it. I never thought much about my innate emotional connection to music and choreography. Every dancer has things that come naturally. I was stretchy as all get-out, could jump for days and had an uncanny understanding of the story and style of choreography. I also had zero turnout and a weak port de bras. So, I worked (and worked and worked) on those things that didn’t come naturally.
Now, returning to the world of dance and seeing dancers (whose athleticism has increased tenfold from the time I trained) struggle to engage emotionally with material, I realize that storytelling with the body is not instinctual for everyone. But it can be learned.
My Background of…
classical ballet training
revue shows and musical theater
actor training including the Meisner Technique and Practical Aesthetics with Atlantic Theater Company
prizes won for short stories and screenplays…
puts me in a rarified place — at the crossroads of dance, acting and story creation — a position that enables me to breakdown the elements of acting/storytelling for dancers. And I am truly grateful and very excited I get to share this knowledge with my students.
